Caltanissetta, a city in Sicily, is 568 meters above sea level (the sixth largest city in the province of the highest province of Italy) dominated by San Giuliano Mountain and overlooking the Valle del Salso River. The etymology comes from the Q'al'at Nissa, which means "Castle of Women", a small Sicilian village, built in the Sabucan area; Of ancient origin, even pre-Greek or certainly Sicilian, located in the area of Mount Gebel Habib ("the happy mountain"), underwent the various domination that over the centuries alternated on the island. In 123 a. C. was conquered by the Romans guided by the consul Lucio Petilio, who founded a colony named in his honor "Petiliana", then around 831 d. C., the Arabs arrived who added to the original name the prefix Q'al'at (castle) from which Qalat-an-Nissa, the castle of women. In 1087, the town was occupied by the Normans, and became the possession of Gran Roger Count, which transformed it into a feud for several members of his family. He built the Romanesque abbey of Santo Spirito, where there was a rock village and a basilic convent on the remains of a Roman-made farm. During the Aragonese rule he was built in the county and given a feud to Corrado Lancia, which was counted by Count Federico III. In 1407, he passed to the Moncada of Paternò and remained there until the suppression of feudality in Sicily in 1812. The Sicilian Polyphonic School (Vinci, Martoretta, etc.) was built at the Moncada Court. In 1816, during the Bourbon period, Caltanissetta was elevated to provincial capital, thanks to the mediation of lawyer Mauro Tumminelli. For this reason, the Nissena population refused to take part in the separatist movements of Palermo in 1820, and the city had to be plundered by some armed gangs, formed by galleots and former prisoners, led by Salvatore Galletti, prince of San Cataldo, who They devastated the Grace district. He adhered to the revolutionary and independent motives of 1848-1849, led by Ruggero Settimo, which ended in Caltanissetta, where the capitulation of the revolutionaries was signed. Garibaldi and his thousand arrived in Caltanissetta on 2 July 1860 and returned to them on August 10. Like all Sicily in the same year, it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. After the Unity of Italy it was affected by a great economic boom due mainly to intense mining activity. Since 1838, the rolling roads connected it to Piazza Armerina, Barrafranca and Canicattì; In 1867, gas came in and in 1878 the railway arrived, while in 1914 the arrival of electricity allowed the opening of the first cinema. During the Second World War, several bombings took place during which 351 civilians died; Immediately after the war Caltanissetta began to heal most of the wounds received in her heritage: in the 1950s she began restoring the cathedral, destroyed by the 1943 American aviation bombings. In the '50s and' 60s, with the approval of a new Regulatory Plan, the city has experienced significant urban expansion, which has led to the emergence of new neighborhoods and new communication arteries. In the early '70s, the sulfur extraction sector was down; the industry's irreversible crisis reached the non-return point at that time, and the last sulfate was also closed.
