About the university
On September 10, 1997. Andrzej Czerwiński, President of the Municipal Public Service Zone - Rudolf Borusiewicz and Chairman of the Provincial Parliament - Edward Paszek, applied to the Ministry of National Education for the establishment of a public university. The University started its activity on July 1, 1998 under the Regulation of the Council of Ministers of June 16, 1998 on the creation of the State Higher Vocational School in Nowy Sącz (Journal of Laws No. 76, item 499). At that time three institutes were created: Economic Institute with specializations: administration and finance of the public sector, tourism economics; Institute of Foreign Languages on the basis of the Teacher College Language with specialties: teaching English, teaching German; Pedagogical Institute on the basis of the College of Teachers with specializations: physical education and computer science, mathematics and computer science, mathematics with physical education, early school education and pre-school education. In the academic year 1998/1999, eight studies of 458 students were started in 8 specializations: 385 in full-time studies and 73 in part-time studies. The first rector of the PWSZ, appointed for one academic year by the Minister of National Education and then chosen by the academic community for two four-year terms (1999-2003 and 2003-2007) was prof. Dr hab. Andrzej Baland.
