Objectives The Master in urbanism aims to train students for the practice of urbanism and land planning, through a set of course units that present and discuss the principles and methods needed by the urban planner. Recipients To exercise the profession of urban planner, it is important that students have some theoretical and conceptual bases, and the areas closest to urbanism are those with the greatest affinity to these subjects, such as urbanism, geography, engineering (civil and environmental), or architecture. However, in order to deepen knowledge and work in the context of urbanism within other disciplinary areas, through transdisciplinarity, those who intend to work within the scope of defining territorial policies, planning and solutions for the territory, whatever their training base, find in the master's degree in urbanism a way to train themselves for the understanding of urban problems and their solution, in a transversal and coordinated vision. Career Prospects In the public administration, the main employers of urban planners are the municipalities, the regional coordination commissions and the general directorates of the ministries involved in spatial planning, where they are part of teams that prepare studies and municipal, regional or national urbanization plans (depending on the employer), issue technical opinions on the plans that are submitted for approval and manage urban space. In the private sector, there are urban planning offices where they are part of teams that prepare urban projects, advise municipalities on the preparation of studies and plans, issue opinions on land transactions, real estate development activities or urban development activities. There are also those urban planners who choose to work as independent professionals.
