As can be seen in the historical data of the University of Santiago de Compostela, for years the programme «Biodiversity and Preservation of the Natural Environment» received a considerable number of students. Most of these students completed their studies with the presentation of papers for supervised research, doctoral dissertations, and are currently occupying positions in the industry, in teaching and in research. In the entire planet, human activity is destroying biological communities. The threats to biological diversity are without precedent, and never in the history of life have so many species been threatened with extinction in such a short period of time. Current efforts focus on understanding diversity, saving species, establishing new preservation areas and protecting existing natural parks.
