About the university
In 1768 the Kharkov College (predecessor of Kharkov University) opened the so-called "surplus" classes, among them - drawing class. In fact, it was the first public art school in the province that started working around 11 years after the opening of the St. peterburhskoy Academy of Arts (1757) - the only in the entire Empire special art institution. In 1869 the school opened in Kharkiv drawing-Ivanov M. Rajewski as a separate institution that, due to the conversion of Kharkov in major industrial center, has chosen art-industrial direction. During the 27 years of school art education received about 900 students. Since 1896 private school M.Rayevskiy-Ivanova was transformed into the city's art school. In 1912 was opened in Kharkiv Art College, St. peterburhskoy subordinate Academy of Arts. opened in 1921 Kharkiv Art College high type in 1927-1963 based on his work Art Institute, which in 1963 was reorganized into Kharkov Art and Industrial Institute and redeveloped to prepare industrial profile artists in two fields.
