About the university
The Turkestan Institute of Oriental Studies was founded in November 1918. In 1990 it was renamed the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Tashkent State University. July 15, 1991 was reorganized into the Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies. The Institute trains specialists in Eastern languages and literature, economics, history, philosophy, culture of the countries of the East and international relations. The following oriental languages are taught: Azerbaijani, Arabic, Vietnamese, Dari, Chinese, Korean, Persian, Pashto, Tajik, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, Hindi, Japanese, and also 4 European languages: English, Spanish, German and French. Training is conducted in Uzbek and Russian. After the release of TashGIV, students have one or two eastern languages and one of the European languages, depending on the specialty. The Institute is staffed and taught by native speakers from the countries of the East, professors with degrees of ambassadors from different countries, including the East and professors trained in other countries' universities, teach at the Department of International Relations. The Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies is one of the largest Oriental higher education institutions in Asia and the countries of the post-Soviet space.
