About the university
L’histoire de l’Université de Kolwezi commence en 1997, lorsque le Recteur de l’Unilu, le Professeur KAKOMA SAKATOLO ZAMBEZE, sur demande des notabilités de Kolwezi et de la Société Civile de Kolwezi, a accepté d’ouvrir l’Extension de l’Université de Lubumbashi à Kolwezi. Cependant, il existe bien une préhistoire à cela. Dès la période coloniale vers les années 1958 et 1959 l’idée d’implanter une Université à Kolwezi avait déjà germé. C’est en 1960 qu’elle devient effective lorsqu’on créa l’Extension de l’Université de Lovanium à Kolwezi. Elle était dirigée par le RP Franciscain HANSEN. Cette Extension a fonctionné dans les installations du Collège Baudouin 1er (Actuel Institut du Lualaba). Elle n’aura duré que le temps d’un rêve : une unique année. Les événements survenus au lendemain de l’indépendance du Congo obligèrent les responsables à fermer ses portes.
