Established in 1991, Université Libre des Pays des Grands Lacs (Free University of the Great Lakes Countries) is a non-profit private higher education institution located in the the urban setting of the large city of Goma (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), North Kivu. Officially accredited/recognized by the Ministère de l'Enseignement Supérieur et Universitaire, République Démocratique du Congo (Ministry of Higher Education, Democratic Republic of the Congo), Université Libre des Pays des Grands Lacs (ULPGL) is a small (enrollment range: 3,000-3,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Université Libre des Pays des Grands Lacs (ULPGL) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 26 years old H.E. institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 60-70% making this Congolese higher education organization a somewhat selective institution. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment. ULPGL also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, housing, sport facilities and/or activities, study abroad and exchange programs, as well as administrative services. The University of the Free Land of the Great Lakes is located in the western city of Goma, 13 km from the international airport, 9 km from downtown, near Lake Kivu. In addition to its two sites (campuses) in Goma, it has two campuses, one of Butembo in North Kivu province and the province of Bukavu in South Kivu.
