About the university
The history of the University of Mwene-Ditu, in acronym "UMD" is a continuation of the history of the three first Universities of the country, created in the colonial era, which are the University of Lovanium 1954 in Kinshasa), the UOC (created in 1956 in Lubumbashi) and the Free University of Congo (ULC) (created in 1959 in Kisangani). Because of multiple crises, it becomes difficult for students to study far from their families. The three public universities then decide to open extensions in certain cities of the country. It is in this context that the University of Lubumbashi, in acronym "UNILU", will open certain extensions, notably in Kabinda, Kalemie, Kamina, Kolwezi, Likasi and Mbuji-Mayi. These extensions of the UNILU will subsequently be recognized as university centers. At the beginning of the 2002-2003 academic year, the Mbuji-Mayi University Center, an extension of the UNILU, opened auditoriums in the city of Mwene-Ditu, operating in the Bukasa district. This is the beginning of the UMD. Since 29/08/2011, by the Ministerial decree N ° 249 / MINESU / CAB.MIN / CD / JN / 2011 of 29/08/2011, the University Center of Mwene-Ditu (CUMD) is set up as a Public Autonomous Institution. As of this date, the University of Mwene-Ditu enjoys all the rights granted to the Public Institutions of Higher Education and University of the country, like the other National Public Universities such as UNIKIN, UNILU And UNIKIS.
