About the university
The university of Schmalkalden is based in the Thuringian Schmalkalden and was founded in its current form in 1991. It is therefore one of the younger German universities. Her international name is HS Fachhochschule Schmalkalden. From 1902 to 1918 the "Royal Technical College for Small Iron and Steel Products Industry Schmalkalden" was located in Schmalkalden, from 1919 to 1949 the State Technical College. During the GDR period, the engineering school for mechanical engineering Schmalkalden existed between 1950 and 1990. The Fachhochschule Schmalkalden follows these traditions. In the present form the Fachhochschule Schmalkalden was founded on 1 October 1991.
