State Islamic University Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang stands based on Presidential Decree No. 50 dated June 21, 2004. Starting from the idea of ​​East Java leaders to establish an Islamic higher education institution under the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the IAIN Branch Establishment Committee was established by Decree of Minister of Religious Affairs No. 17 Year 1961 which was assigned to establish Faculty of Syari'ah domiciled in Surabaya and Faculty of Tarbiyah which domiciled in Malang. Both are the branch faculty of IAIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and inaugurated together by the Minister of Religious Affairs on October 28, 1961. On October 1, 1964 founded Ushuluddin Faculty based in Kediri through Decree of Minister of Religious Affairs no. 66/1964. In its development, the three branch faculties are merged and structurally under the auspices of the Sunan Ampel State Islamic Institute (IAIN) established under the Decree of the Minister of Religious Affairs No. 20 years 1965. Since then, the Faculty of Tarbiyah Malang is the branch faculty of IAIN Sunan Ampel. Through Presidential Decree no. 11 In 1997, in mid 1997 Tarbiyah Faculty of Malang IAIN Sunan Ampel switched status to State Islamic High School (STAIN) Malang along with the change of institutional status of all branch faculty in IAIN environment in Indonesia which amounted to 33 pieces. Thus, since then also STAIN Malang is an autonomous Islamic higher education institution that is separated from IAIN Sunan Ampel.
