About the university
At the end of the 1950 decade, some East Java Muslim community leaders proposed the idea of establishing an Islamic religious college under the Ministry of Religion. To realize the idea, they held a meeting in Jombang in 1961. During the meeting, Professor Soenarjo, Rector of State Islamic University of Sunan Kalijaga , was present as a resource to convey the necessary points of thought as the foundation of the establishment of the Aagama Islam Higher Education. In the final session of the historic meeting, the forum endorsed several important decisions: (1) Establishing IAIN Establishment Committee, (2) Establishing Sharia Faculty in Surabaya, and (3) Establishing Faculty of Tarbiyah in Malang. Since its establishment until now (1965-2015), UINSA Surabaya has been led by 8 rectors. Currently UINSA Surabaya has 9 undergraduate and graduate faculty, as well as 44 courses (33 undergraduates, 8 master programs and 3 doctorates).
