About the university
The Pontifical Theological Faculty "San Bonaventura" Seraphicum, erected on January 24, 1905, is an Institute of Superior Studies of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual for the Teaching of Theology. The Collegio di San Bonaventura of Rome, also known as the Pontifical Sistine College or "Seraphicum", was founded on December 18, 1587 by Pope Sisto V, also a minor conventual Friar, as continued by the ancient General Studies of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. In the Apostolic Constitution "Ineffabilis divinae Providentiae", the pontiff prescribes in particular the study of San Bonaventura's thought. Following the abolition of ecclesiastical bodies, following the unification of Italy, in 1873 the College interrupted academic activity but was never abolished canonically. In 1894, in the area of Velabro, the new International Seraphic College was erected, and in 1905 the theological faculty was re-named by Pontiff Pius X.
