About the university
The Naval Academy is a war school and university college offering bachelor's degree in military studies for officers in the Navy. The school was established in Fredriksvern in 1817, and has been at Laksevåg in Bergen since 1960. The school's history can be traced back to 1701 when the Søcadet Academy in Copenhagen began the education of maritime officers to the Danish-Norwegian joint fleet. The Royal Norwegian Søcadet Institute was opened at Marin's main station Fredriksvern on 27 October 1817. Later, the naval war school was transferred to Horten while the Navy's main base was established there in 1864. The teaching took place until the 9 April 1940 war. During World War II, the Navy was reorganized and built in the UK, and in 1941 a seaward school in London was established. Later in the period, education took place near Edinburgh. After the war, the Swedish Maritime War took a temporary position in Oslo. This "temporary" scheme lasted 15 years before the school received its current location at Wallemsviken, Laksevåg outside Bergen in 1960.
