About the university
The university was established in 1945 as the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Łódź. Her first rector was Leon Ormezowski. By creating the program, founders of the Lodz academy sought inspiration in the artistic and didactic achievements of Bauhaus [3] and pedagogical experience of Kazimierz Malewicz. Much emphasis has also been put on the development of visual consciousness in the context of the latest currents in art. Władysław Strzemiński, who taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1945-1950, was greatly influenced by the school. His art and didactic conceptualize the school's character at that time. The university adopted its name in 1988. In 1976, a university, located in the interwar building at ul. Narutowicza 77, received a new seat, erected according to Bolesław Kardaszewski's design. The monumental building is still today the only example of a complex in Poland that has been developed for the needs of today's multi-faculty arts college. In 1996 the school received the status of the Academy of Fine Arts.
