About the university
Academy of Special Education is the oldest university of the pedagogical profile in Poland. On the initiative and efforts of Maria Grzegorzewska in 1922. Then Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Education decided to merge the National Seminar of Special Education and the Institute of Phonetic them. Jana Siestrzyńskiego, citing the National Institute of Special Education (PIPS). Director of PIPS was Maria Grzegorzewska, exercising this function until his death in 1967. The main task of the Institute was the training of active teachers, preparing them to deal with children with disabilities, as well as the training of professionals to work in special schools for deaf children, the blind, mentally retarded and "morally neglected". At the same time the unit was required to undertake research developed special education issues.
