About the university
State Film, Television and Theater School Leon Schiller (PWSFTviT, original name: State Film School) - state university founded on March 8, 1948 in Łódź, educating future actors, directors, film and television operators, photographers, editors, screenwriters and television and film producers. State Film, Television and Theater School Leon Schiller was created in 1958 as a result of the merger of two Lodz academies - the State Higher School of Film, established in 1948 (with director and operator faculties) and the State Higher School of Actors (founded in 1949). Lodz and renamed in 1954 to the Leon Schiller State Theater School). The schools started their activity in Łódź, mainly because in the early postwar years in Warsaw there was no precondition for the quick launch of film production. Both schools were pioneering, because before World War II there was no tradition of state education of actors and directors at the university level in Poland.
