About the university
October 3, 1967. By the Decree Lusitanorum Nobilissima Gens, the Roman Congregation for Catholic Education begins the Catholic University of Portugal. The first Faculty is the Faculty of Philosophy of Braga already in operation in that city since 1947. The following year opens, in Lisbon, the Faculty of Theology. July 15, 1971. The State officially recognizes the Portuguese Catholic University as a collective public utility person whose purpose is, inter alia, to "minister higher education in parallel with the other Portuguese Universities" (Decree-Law No. 307 / 71). The Decree Humanam Eruditionem canonically establishes the Portuguese Catholic University. It culminates a process, initiated decades before under the aegis of the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon, Mr. Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira. The Portuguese Church has a university whose mission of teaching and research will be complemented by a perspective of integral formation inspired by Christian values. As in many European countries, North America and South America, Asia and Australia, there is also a Catholic University in Portugal.
