About the university
The first steps on the way to what is now the University of Beira Interior (UBI) were given in the 1970s, when the Polytechnic Institute of Covilhã (IPC) was founded in 1973. The city, once considered "Manchester Portuguese" Tradition, dynamics and quality of its wool, was hit by an industrial crisis in that decade: large and small factories began to reveal serious weaknesses that would lead to its closure, with disastrous social and economic consequences for the region. In the 90's, it was decided to expand the University to the North end of the city, near Ribeira da Carpinteira (Polo IV). In 2006, the construction of the Faculty of Health Sciences was completed at Polo III, thus completing the program for the installation of the infrastructures of the Medicine course, given from 2001/2002. At the moment, UBI welcomes more than 6 thousand students, distributed in five faculties - Arts and Letters, Sciences, Health Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Engineering - with a suitable educational offer to Bologna and laboratory and research structures to support teaching And with strong connections to society and the business world.
