About the university
The University of Évora was founded on November 1, 1559 by Cardinal D. Henrique, Archbishop of Évora, later King of Portugal, from the College of the Holy Spirit. It was instituted by the Bull of Pope Paul IV, as the University of the Holy Spirit and handed over to the Society of Jesus, who directed it for two centuries. In 1759 it was closed by order of Marquês do Pombal, when the Jesuits were expelled. It was reopened in 1973, by decree of the then Minister of Education, José Veiga Simão. In the same place where the former University was closed, the University Institute of Évora (IUE) was created. In 1975, the Bento de Jesus Caraça School of Social and Economic Studies was created by Decree-Law no. 513/75 of 20 September, seeking to replace the Évora Economic and Social Superior Institute (ISESE), founded in 1964 - On the initiative of the Company of Jesus and the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation, which suspended its teaching activities following 25 April 1974. In 1976 the Bento de Jesus Caraça School of Social and Economic Studies was extinguished and its students integrated In the newly created IUE Department of Economics. In 1979, the University Institute of Évora gave rise to the new University of Évora.
