About the university
Founded in 1988, the Open University (UAb) is the only public higher education institution dedicated to distance education. From the outset, UAb has been geared towards the education of large geographically dispersed masses. A pioneer in distance higher education in Portugal, UAb has promoted actions related to higher education and continuing education, also contributing to the dissemination and expansion of the Portuguese language and culture, with special emphasis on Portuguese-speaking countries and communities. Its faculty and researchers have developed scientific research activities through the use of information and communication technologies, designing and producing teaching materials in the areas of distance education and training, and multimedia educational communication.
