About the university
The University of Porto was formally constituted on March 22, 1911, following the establishment of the Republic in Portugal. Its roots, however, go back to the eighteenth century and to a combination of formative experiences in areas linked to Sciences, Arts and Medicine, which would come to be projected in the future University. It is then on a solid foundation of almost 150 years of evolution that the U.Porto opens its doors in 1911. In an initial phase, the University appears structured in two faculties (Sciences and Medicine), but, during the 20th century, There is a diversification of knowledge and an autonomization of schools. In the first quarter of the 20th century, the Technical Faculty (renamed in 1926 as Faculty of Engineering) was created in 1915, the Faculty of Letters in 1919 and the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1925. The U.Porto growth was, however, conditioned during the Estado Novo, an authoritarian political regime that was in force in Portugal between 1926 and 1974. The Faculty of Letters was abolished in 1928, to be restored only in 1961. In fact, only the Faculty of Economy was founded from scratch in this period, in 1953.
