About the university
ESSA was founded in 1994 from the restructuring of the Alcoa Rehabilitation School (ERA) created by Order 22034 of 4th June 1966. ERA was integrated into the Alcoitão Rehabilitation Center, an institution supported by SCML. SCML has many years of experience in training healthcare professionals in the area of rehabilitation, dating back to the creation of the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy courses in 1957 and the Speech Therapy course in 1962. Although we only recently joined the national education system (1994), ESSA's experience spans more than 45 years of training Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Therapists, having been the first school in Portugal to train these professionals. The history of the evolution of this educational institution, leading up to our current status as a higher educational institution, spans five decades in which three distinct phases can be identified. These phases correspond to changes in the nature of our teaching, which can be summarized as follows:
