About the university
The General Gutiérrez Mellado University Institute was founded in 1997 , on the initiative of the Ministry of Defense, as a research and teaching center specialized in issues related to the search for peace, security and defense to fill the gap in the Spanish university environment Of this type of studies, hitherto practically linked to military education centers. The National University of Distance Education (UNED), considering it a suitable instrument to strengthen the ties between the political, military and academic spheres, accepted the challenge and contributed its particular system of distance learning and incorporating the technological advances that characterize the real world. The Institute receives its name from the captain general Manuel Gutiérrez Mellado, who in 2012 was commemorated with various academic activities the centenary of his birth. This distinguished military figure was distinguished among other things to defend and spread the idea of involving the University in matters traditionally exclusive to the military world in order to bring the Armed Forces closer to the society of which they are part and which they should serve.
