About the university
The University of Vigo is an innovative and modern institution which was established in 1990, after it separated from the University of Santiago de Compostela. It is a public institution that is committed to the principles of equality, solidarity, democracy and liberty. Galician is the official language but Spanish is also used. Almost all information written about and by the University of Vigo is in Galician, including syllabi and subject contents. There are many lecturers who teach in Spanish while others use Galician in class. Freedom of teaching, research and study, together with interdisciplinarity, ideological pluralism and participation are basic to their job fulfilment. The University of Vigo chiefly depends on public financing, although it increasingly finances its budget from own resources generated through research and transfer of results to companies.
