About the university
Wadmedani is taken to be the town from which emanated the national concept of non-governmental (community sponsored) education. The concept emerged as an attempt the break the colonial straitjacket around education. The philanthropist, among the Sudanese, labored to crack this straitjacket, quantitatively and qualitatively, in what may be termed the first revaluation of non-governmental education(Ahli). When the present government started issuing for higher education institutes , Wadmedani Ahlia university emerged as a not for-profit and not-private institution . . We must reiterate that it is not-for-profit and not-private any financial returns do not go to the pocket of an individual, a family or group, instead, these returns are used to develop the university by developing programs, lecture halls laboratories and by employing more are better qualified staff. The first class in the university was on 2 February 1992, on 17 April 1995 Wadmedani witnessed the graduation of the first batch which comprised 87 male and female graduates the university has moved to its present premises in WadMedani which is located about 180Km south of Khartoum. (National education) started in the recent history of Sudan. The idea of Ahlia education was initiated by some philanthropists from Wadmedani in order to break the colonial barrier around education. That was in early 1940s. Educational chances were hence increased to include more citizens. In Dec 1989, the Government initiated a higher education revolution and the doors were opened for new private and ahli institutes. It was then when a private institute was started in the name of its owner. Later, the institute's name was changed to Wadmedani Ahlia university (WAC).
