About the university
The Conservatoire de Lausanne was founded in 1861 , with the dual objective of allowing amateurs to study music and future professional musicians to train themselves in their profession. In 1990, the Conservatoire moved to its current premises, the former Galleries of Commerce, in the district of Saint-François. For 150 years, the Haute Ecole de Musique and the Conservatoire de Lausanne have brought together these two categories of students. The "non-professional" sectors are grouped under the "Conservatoire de Lausanne" entity, while the "vocational" branch - Haute Ecole de musique de Lausanne (HEMU) is integrated into the HES-SO ( Specialized University of Western Switzerland ) . Open to the greatest number, the Conservatoire de Lausanne also makes it possible to identify in the ranks of its students the personalities who have the capacities necessary for a career as a professional musician. About 400 students are trained at the University of Music in Lausanne, and 1,200 students are enrolled at the Conservatoire. In addition, the mission of HEMU is to provide theoretical and instrumental training adapted to future teachers registered at the Haute école pédagogique vaudoise. The collaboration between the HEMU and the University of Lausanne (UNIL) is under development and the creation of a Chair in Musicology at UNIL is one of the steps that will bring the two institutions closer together.
