About the university
At the end of 1996, seven prestigious tertiary and higher art institutions - the Carlos López Buchardo National Conservatory of Music, the National School of Fine Arts "Prilidiano Pueyrredón", the Superior School of Fine Arts of the Nation "Ernesto de la Cárcova", the National Superior Institute of Ceramics, the National School of Dramatic Art "Antonio Cunill Cabanellas", the National Superior Institute of Dances and the National Superior Institute of Folklore - came together to give life to what was then Denominated National University Institute of the Art. Its creation meant the concretion of a long delayed project whose criterion was to transform into university the artistic education dependent on the Nation residing in the City of Buenos Aires. The birth of IUNA not only meant the adaptation of the old tertiary careers to make that leap to university status, but also involved the development of new areas and careers to account for emerging languages or activities marginalized up to the time of university education . In 2014, recognizing the disciplinary diversity that converged in IUNA and its growth during the first eighteen years, the National Congress changed by law its denomination to National University of the Arts.
