About the university
UMIT’s history is not very long, yet the university succeeded in gaining an outstanding international reputation over the last five years. The basis for the foundation of UMIT was the Austrian University Accreditation Law which was adopted by the Austrian National Assembly in 1999. This law comprises nine sections which determine the basic conditions for the foundation and the operation of a university that is not funded by the state. In summer 2000, first discussions were held about founding a university of Medical Informatics. The background was that well trained and qualified personnel was needed for the two centres of competence HITT (Health Information Technologies Tirol) and KMT (Kompetenzzentrum Medizin Tirol = Medical Competence Centre of Tirol) that were being planned at that time as well as for hospitals and other health institutions.
