About the university
The idea of creating a Polytechnic University in Gomel belongs to the former director of the Gomselmash plant, Ivan Prokofievich Kotenka. It was his initiative, supported by local authorities and the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education, that was the impetus that led to the opening of the general technical faculty of the Belarusian Order of the Red Banner of Labor of the Polytechnic Institute (BPI) at the Gomselmash plant. The first 200 evening students began their studies on October 1, 1968. Training was conducted in three specialties: engineering technology, metal-cutting machines and tools; Machines and technology of metal forming; Machines and technology of foundry. Roman Alekseevich Rutto, Candidate of Technical Sciences, was appointed the first dean of the Gomel General Technical Faculty of the BPI.
