About the university
The first university of Catholic orientation of the country was the University of Santo Tomas , which was created in 1843 by decree 11 of the government of Mr. Jose Maria Alfaro Zamora . This university was established on the basis of the pre-existing House of Teaching of Santo Tomás , founded since 1814 by the Diocesan Bishop of Costa Rica and Nicaragua, Mr. Nicolás García Jerez . In 1888 the Secretary of State Mauro Fernández Acuña decides to close the University, because it considered more important to strengthen the middle education, before focusing on the university formation. It was in 1941 that Costa Rica again had a center of studies of this nature, with the creation of the University of Costa Rica , but it was not until 1993 that the Bishops' Conference of Costa Rica established an official Catholic university in the country. The University was created under the name of Catholic University of Costa Rica Anselmo Llorente and Lafuente , in honor of the first Bishop of Costa Rica , who promoted the formation of Priests and founder of the first Seminary of that country. It was founded on the existing Pedagogical Institute of Religion , which was the center of higher education dedicated to the training of teachers of religious education.
