The Department of New Media and Communications is within the European University of Lefke- Faculty of Communication Sciences. Depending on the developing technologies, the shape, speed and direction of the journalism and news broadcasting concept has also changed today, thus shifting from conventional media to digital media. Today, even high-circulation newspapers are in the process of stopping their prints and deciding to keep their broadcasts on the digital platforms. Those who cannot take this “radical” change decision yet feel the necessity to add broadcasts in the digital environment by considering the falling circulation. The inevitable change and development in this implication reinforce the higher education institutions which support this field to provide the correct information and education to raise experts to the field who are keen to receive and process information correctly, distribute it swiftly and who are loyal to professional ethics. The Department of New Media and Communications is founded with this understanding and aims to educate creative journalists who are shaping the curriculum and equipped with the information required by new media and journalistic world which is adaptable to digital technologies, add value to new media circles. To this end, our department has an academic program that includes the effects of new media technologies, not only in the field of printed publishing but also in the field of radio and television news, including social media. Digital Media, also called New Media, is a technological development as well as providing new job opportunities. It also allows for an important transformation in terms of creating employment opportunities. Thanks to the Internet journalism, besides the shift of the printed media to the internet, blog creation and blog writing, internet advertising, digital marketing, digital advertising, digital design, and similar fields of media has been introduced. Within this scope new employment opportunities have emerged for our graduates. Our department graduates can work in the areas of print publishing, radio and television, and related media, as well as increased demand in internet journalism, social media expertise, digital content production, digital project coordination and management, publishing and activity / event planning and coordination in the new media, as blog authors and administrators and digital advertising – advertisers. It is also possible to say that in the emerging years, the Media and Communications departments will be able to respond to different employment opportunities, anticipating that the conversions in the media will create other categories of jobs. The medium of instruction of the program is English.
