About the university
ENSIC was founded as the Chemical Institute of Nancy in 1887 to provide engineers for the rapidly expanding chemical industry. Its founder is Albin Haller, an Alsatian who settled in Nancy after the annexation of Alsace and the Moselle by Germany. While locally the idea of creating a Chemical Institute was welcomed, serious reservations existed in Paris. Nevertheless, the need for well-trained chemists existed and the only School of Industrial Chemistry, created by the industrialists of Mulhouse in the middle of the nineteenth century, was in an annexed province. If the chemists who taught at that time at the Sorbonne and the Collège de France were not sensitive to the example of German universities, fortunately for Albin Haller, it was not so in the offices of the Ministry of Education, Public Instruction. One of his first professors, Victor Grignard, received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1912 for his invention of organometallic compounds known as Grignard reagents. After the Second World War, ENSIC introduced in France the principles of chemical engineering developed in the English-speaking world.
