About the university
Founded in 1803 as the School of Design, it is housed in a former convent of the Ursules district in 1857 with municipal status. Renamed the Regional School of Industrial Arts in 1884, the École régionale des beaux-arts in 1923 and the École supérieure d'art et design in 2006, the school has been closely linked to industrial development and economic development. A town which was, throughout the nineteenth century, at the forefront of industrial modernity. Its history marries that of the industrial arts and brings into play all the tensions connected with it: art and economy; Aesthetics and functionality; Sovereignty and control; Fine arts, applied arts and decorative arts. It is this story that led the school, under the direction of Jacques Bonnaval, to transform the environment department into a design department from 1990 and to create, in 1998, the International Design Biennale of Saint-Étienne. This dynamic continues today within the public institution of cultural cooperation (EPCC) bringing together the school and the Cité du design.
