About the university
The Westfälische Hochschule has its origins in the Gelsenkirchen-Buer State Engineering School of Engineering, which started operations on 1 October 1962. By the establishment of the Fachhochschulen in Germany in 1971, the engineering school was affiliated to the newly founded FH Bochum on 1 August 1971 . In October 1991, the Emscher-Lippe agency (ELA) proposed to help the region, which was particularly affected by the decline in coal production, by setting up a university of applied sciences to solve its structural problems. Therefore, the decided state government on 15 January 1992 to build a new University of Applied Sciences, headquartered in Gelsenkirchen. Thus, the department of Gelsenkirchen of the FH Bochum became Gelsenkirchen FH. The Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences was established as a 50th university of the state of North-Rhine Westphalia by means of a regional law. [3] The Fachhochschule offers mainly mathematical, technical and natural sciences courses, supplemented by studies in the fields of economics, law and journalism.
