About the university
Kanchi Mamunivar Centre for Postgraduate Studies (KMCPGS) is a Government of Puducherry Institution started in 1989 with the aim of imparting higher education at the Postgraduate and research level to the urban and rural society. It is affiliated to Pondicherry University. Now the centre offers PG courses in 12 Arts, Humanities and Science disciplines, M.Phil. Programmes in 11 disciplines and Ph.D. Programmes in 7 disciplines.. The Centre is a UGC recognized institution under 2f and 12B of the UGC Act 1956 with effect from 1993. Based on the excellent academic performance of the institution, the University Grants Commission inspected the institution in August 2007 and conferred Autonomous Status for a period of six years from the academic year 2007-08 to 2012-13 and it was also approved by Pondicherry University. The Peer Team of NAAC, New Delhi, also made a thorough study of the achievements of the Centre and accredited it at A level (85%) in 2005. Among all the Colleges in the Union Territory of Puducherry, the Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University recommended this Centre alone to the UGC to declare it as "A College with Potential for Excellence" and the Centre was bestowed with the honour of "A College with Potential for Excellence" in 2010 by the UGC.
