The Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara, named after ABAC, is a public university for the study of visual arts based in Via Roma According to the training offer (MIUR), the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, is included in the university sector in the field of high artistic and musical education and issues academic degrees of the first level (degree) and II level (master degree). The Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara adheres to the Erasmus project. The official foundation of the Carrara Academy of Fine Arts dates back to September 26, 1769. It was patron Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspina, Duchess of Massa and Carrara princess (who was indeed a principality at that time), wife of Ercole Rinaldo d 'Evening, Duke of Modena. Already a few years ago, the foundation of an Academy dedicated to St. Ceccard was laid: welcoming the proposal of Giovanni Domenico Olivieri, a Carrara sculptor who had lived at the court of Filippo V of Spain and collaborated at the foundation of the Madrid Academy of Maria Teresa had promulgated the statutes of an Academy in Carrara already in April 1757, which included the teaching of the three arts, painting, sculpture and architecture. The sculptor Lio Gangeri was Professor and Director of the Carrara Academy.
