The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NMBU), formerly the University of Environmental and Life Sciences (UMB) and the Norwegian Agricultural University College (NLH), is located in Ås in Akershus and is Norway's central and leading research and educational center for bioproduction, environment and landscape. The university has several research institutes and environments in landscape, agriculture, forestry and horticulture, livestock, nature management, development studies, economics and technology disciplines. NMBU has 5,000 students and 1,500 employees. Until 2021, the university will have its own campus for the veterinary medicine in Oslo before it is co-located on Ås.
