he Institute of Military Superior Studies ( IESM ) is an institution of university superior military education , destined to the formation - throughout its race - of the officers of the Portuguese Armed Forces and of the National Republican Guard . The training given in IESM enables officers to the control functions of performance, direction, management and general staff . It was created in August 2005, integrating the functions of the then extinct Instituto de Altos Estudos Militares (Portuguese Army).
