About the university
The Lisbon Higher Nursing School (ESEL), created by Decree Law no. 175/2004 of July 21, resulted from the merger of the four public higher nursing schools of Lisbon - Artur Ravara Superior Nursing School; Nursing School of Calouste Gulbenkian of Lisbon; School of Nursing of Francisco Gentil and Nursing School of Maria Fernanda Resende. Its Statutes have been approved by Regulatory Order no. 16/2009 of April 7 (Diário da República, 2nd Series - Nº 68 - April 7, 2009). The first governing bodies - Board of Directors, Pedagogical Council and School Assembly - took office on 24 September 2007. The genesis of this process dates back to 2001 with the publication of Decree-Law no. 99/2001 of March 28 and part of the need to articulate synergies indispensable to the development of nursing teaching and nursing profession. The decision to create a single school was a freely made decision, which consisted in drawing up a common development plan and implementing several joint projects.
