The Division offers a four-year degree program leading to a B.S. in Chemistry. Within this program are several different tracks, each having its own unique requirements and emphasis. ACS Chemistry The ACS Chemistry degree program has been certified and accredited by the American Chemical Society. It positions our students for immediate work in the field, graduate studies in Chemistry, and, with some additions, medical school or other health profession. The ACS Chemistry Four-Year Degree Plan lays out a schedule that allows for the completion of the medical school requirements in the first three years. General Chemistry Our General Chemistry degree program requires slightly fewer chemistry courses than the ACS track making it ideally suited for those that wish to broaden their studies. As with the ACS degree, our graduates in this program are well positions for pursing the path of their choice after graduation. The General Chemistry Four-Year Degree Plan lays out a schedule that allows for the completion of the medical school requirements in the first three years. Premedical Science Our Premedical Science degree program aims to prepare students for admission into medical school, a pharmacy program, dentistry, optometry, or other health related program. It represents a robust mix of chemistry and biology. Students pursuing this track should carefully consider whether to follow the Calculus or Algebra/Trig path through the program. UMMC in Jackson, MS, expects for students to have only had Algebra and Trig and the algebra based Physics for Life Sciences courses. The Premedical Science Chemistry Four-Year Degree Plan lays out a schedule that allows for the completion of the medical school requirements in the first three years. Biochemistry The biochemistry concentration combines comprehensive instruction in biology along with rigorous study in chemistry. In addition to the coursework for the ACS chemistry degree the biochemistry concentration has more of a focus on modern molecular sciences. This option is suitable for students wishing to enter the health profession, industry, or graduate school. Chemistry Education Our Chem-Ed degree program is a joint effort between the Division of Mathematics & Sciences and the College of Education. This program prepares students to be secondary education school teachers with a certification to teach Chemistry. With the addition of a few courses, this program would prepare one for certification to teach Physics as well. The Chemistry Education Four-Year Degree Plan lays out a schedule that allows the student to take the Praxis after the Junior year and participate in a Directed Internship their Senior year.
