About the university
The Faculty of Social Sciences was created by resolution of the Central Board of Trustees in 1989 and began to work in 1991. Up to that time the activities of research and teaching in Social Sciences were dispersed in different areas of the University. The objective of the new Faculty was to encourage the disciplinary and interdisciplinary development in Social Sciences, both through research as well as undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.The academic structure of the Faculty consists of six departments and academic units: Department of Political Science, Department of Sociology, Department of Social Work, Department of Economics, Multidisciplinary Unit and Regional Studies Unit (based in Salto). These academic units have under their responsibility research tasks in different areas of their competence as well as the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
