The integrated study cycle in Veterinary Medicine aims to train professionals with skills and competences in the most diverse areas of veterinary practice, namely in the areas of clinic and surgery, in what concerns the diagnostic prevention and treatment, as well as in the areas of food security, animal production, animal welfare and public health. It is intended that the student acquires experience based on a strong component created by raising awareness of animal welfare and constantly valuing the concept of "One health”, highlighting the role of the Veterinary Doctor in preventive medicine, in the control of zoonoses and in the protection of public health. We enhanced the adjustment of the course to the new animal protection legislation, integrating the training in medicine of shelter institutions, forensic veterinary medicine, animal welfare and protection and the recovery of wild animals. It also includes emerging areas, such as aquaculture, complementary medicines, animal-assisted activities and provides a solid knowledge base for research in the biomedical sciences All those who successfully complete the course curricular units that form part of the study plan, with a duration of 12 semesters, corresponding to 360 ECTS, obtain a total of 10990 hours, of which 4901 hours are contact hours, including Internships.
