About the university
The Vitebsk State Medical Institute was established by the Decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the BSSR on November 1, 1934 as a medical college with a total contingent of 250 students at all courses. The first director of the Institute was appointed doctor of medical sciences, professor Moses Anisimovich Khazanov, a student of the medical faculty of the University of Bern (Switzerland). Together with him began the work of 12 professors, known in the USSR and abroad medical scientists: Nikolay Titovich Petrov, Vladimir Osipovich Morzon, Felix Yakovlevich Berenshtein, Genokh Izrailevich Kogan, Grigory Arkhipovich Feshchenko, Grigory Khatskelevich Karpilov, AS Furman - inmates 1 st and 2 nd Moscow universities, the Leningrad Military Medical Academy. SM Kirov, Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov, medical faculties of Kazan, Kiev universities and other universities of the country. The first dean was appointed Professor Pavel Markovich Gurevich, a student of Strasbourg University (Alsace - France). In 1938, the medical school was renamed the Vitebsk Medical Institute.
