Today's art school Giebichenstein goes to the Industrial Drawing and Crafts School of the City Hall back. This school was created in 1879 from the union of the existing since 1852 Provincial Vocational School Hall and the existing since 1870 Intellectual drawing school . On 1 July 1915, the architect Paul Thiersch gave new impetus to the school. The school was now called the Crafts and Arts College Halle . Thiersch reformed them in the sense of the ideas of the German Werkbundes and the classes for painting, graphics, sculpture, architecture, textile design, photography as well as carpentry. After the dissolution of the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1925, numerous former Bauhausers came as teachers to the castle, among them the sculptor Gerhard Marcks, who held the office of director from 1928 to 1933. After the seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933 had Marguerite Friedlaender , Gerhard Marcks , Charles Crodel and Erwin Hahs leave school. The school was circumcised by the National Socialist regime and passed on as a tradesmen's school. In the post-war period the castle Giebichenstein was rebuilt as an art school. Under the director Walter Funkat 1958, the foundation stone of which was School of Industrial Design specified that one of the most influential schools of designers and artists, and with the training in the fields of applied art determines the high artistic merit of arts and crafts in until 1989. GDR was , From 1965 to 1975, the art of painting was pushed back as a training subject in favor of form. After 1975, the "castle" regained its old structure as it had in the 1920s and expanded with new subjects (glass, media art, communication design). In 1976, Rector Paul Jung installed the theory and methodology department (head Horst Oehlke, Rolf Frick). In this group, up to 25 scientists from different disciplines worked on design methodology, design theory and intensive preparation for the application of computer technology for design.
