About the university
The Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee (self-reference: weisssee kunsthochschule berlin) is a university for the training of artists of various disciplines and was founded in 1946 in Berlin-Weißensee. A special feature is the basic artistic study, which is binding for all students, which is based on the tradition of the Bauhaus. The university was founded in 1946 by the metal sculptor Otto Sticht in Berlin as an art school of the north. In 1947 the state recognized as a college of art by the Soviet military administration and renamed to the University of Applied Arts. In 1950, Mart Stam became director of the Kunsthochschule and founded the interdisciplinary basic studies. Stam remained director of the university until 1952. In 1953, the University of Applied Art was renamed the College of Fine and Applied Art and in 1969, the Kunsthochschule Berlin.
