The aim of the bachelor’s study subprogramme “Russian Philology” is the following: to provide the academic general knowledge in the field of Russian philology, linguistics and literary studies that correspond to the modern requirements; to offer the specialization in the sphere of the Russian and Slavic languages and cultures; to educate highly qualified, competitive specialists in the sphere of the Russian philology. The tasks of the study subprogramme include the following: 1. To offer students an opportunity to study the Russian language, literature, culture in both the diachronic and synchronic aspects, taking into consideration the interlinguistic and intercultural relations. 2. To increase the students’ chances at the labour market by providing students with the opportunity to study another Slavic language. 3. To stimulate the students’ interest in the Russian philology, offering not only the basic courses in the field of Russian Philology – in linguistics and literary studies, but also the career-oriented courses in the sphere of mass media and culture management, publishing, etc. The students acquire basic and specialized knowledge in the field of Russian philology - study the Russian language in the theoretical and applied aspect, the history and theory of Russian literature in a broad cultural-historical context. Students will choice additional modern Slavic language (Czech, Polish) and practically oriented courses, which form professional and practical competencies in translation, editing, improvement of speech and writing styles, in the methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language. The programme envisages students’ mobility within the framework of Erasmus in the institutions of higher education of Estonia (Tartu and Tallinn Universities), Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, Germany, and many others. Career opportunities: Graduates of the subprogramme will be able to work in newspaper and magazine editorial offices, publishing houses, translation and interpreting agencies in Latvia and Europe, in schools and colleges, on the radio and TV, in tourist agencies, in embassies and diplomatic missions of the Slavic states. After successful completion of the subprogramme, graduates may pursue further studies in the Master’s degree subprogramme ‘Russian and Slavic Studies” or in any other relevant programme.
