During the 2nd cycle studies in Geology you will gain broad knowledge in the field of basic Earth sciences. The duration of studies is 4 semesters, ending with the MSc degree. Following this, you can continue education during four-year doctoral studies in one of the following two doctoral schools: Doctoral School at the University of Silesia in Katowice and International Environmental Doctoral School associated with the Centre for Polar Studies. You will know how to... solve theoretical problems and practical geological tasks in the field of prospecting and deposit geology, as well as protection and valuation of land for communes, institutions and private investors; design geological work for the purpose of geological prospecting and geological mapping, use and visualise geological data, as well as interpret satellite and aerial photos, apply in practice the acquired methods for the production of glass, monocrystals, semi-conductors, ceramics and refractories; use modern instrumental methods for examination of minerals, rocks and other products, analyse pollution of atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere, use monitoring methods relevant for sphere to design corrective and remedial actions in the environment, recreate the chronology of geological events on Earth, study the age of rocks; apply in practice the methods for analysing fossils; reconstruct paleoenvironments and paleoecological conditions; recognise the taxonomy of selected fossil fauna groups, work with state-of-the-art equipment, software for interpretation and databases used in geology, take decisions related to the management of water resources, minerals and energy, including energy from renewable sources, work in international research teams thanks to knowledge of foreign language and social competencies.
