Programme overview: During the 2nd cycle studies in Applied Geology you will gain advanced knowledge in the field of practical applications of geology. The duration of studies is 3 semesters, ending with the MSc Eng. degree. You can choose one of the following five majors: Environmental Geochemistry and Mineralogy (GiMŚ) Geophysics (GF) Prospecting Geology (GP) Mineral Resources Management (GZSM) Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology (HiGI) The above majors are launched in a specific academic year if at least five students are recruited. After completing these studies, you can continue education during four-year doctoral studies in one of the following two doctoral schools: Doctoral School at the University of Silesia in Katowice and International Environmental Doctoral School associated with the Centre for Polar Studies. The programme allows students to gain advanced knowledge in the field of applied Earth sciences. What will you learn? what basics of general geology are indispensable for a geology engineer, what the advanced applications of computer techniques in Earth sciences are, what basic entrepreneurship is and how to navigate in the labour market for geologists, how to prepare environmental impact reports, what geomaterials are, how we study and use them, what the advanced techniques of research on air pollution are and what we actually breathe, the applications of geophysics in geology (and more), what natural risks are, how to study and and prevent them, what methods of prospecting geology are and how a modern Earth treasure hunter works, how to develop computer geological models and what possibilities to create forecasts and take decisions they provide, how to administer mineral raw materials, use and dispose of waste, how to protect and use water resources, how geology is applied in construction, hydraulic engineering and geotechnics, other interesting things in selected elective courses.
