About the university
University of Warsaw (historical names: Royal University of Warsaw , the Imperial University of Warsaw , University of Jozef Pilsudski in Warsaw ) - Polish public university founded November 19, 1816 in Warsaw by Russian Tsar Alexander I on the initiative of Stanislaw Kostka Potocki and Staszic . During its activity the university was closed several times (including in 1831 after the November Uprising and during the German occupation in 1939-1945. Currently, UW is the largest and one of the best universities in Poland . In the Ranking of Universities "Perspectives" and "Rzeczpospolita" every year is one of the first two places . In the ranking for the year 2016 Warsaw University took the 1st place . In the international ranking QS World University Rankings for the academic year 2016/2017 the University of Warsaw took 366 place in the world (the highest of all Polish universities
